I created this piece to show how injustice and how inhuman some people's views are towards rape. When designing this piece i had the Brock Turner investigation in mind. This investigation shows how the colour of your skin and wealth can influence the justification of the crime whether it’s as cold-blooded as this crime is, so disgusting that no defence, no lawyer (rich or poor) can defend this raping animal. Let’s say, an African American from Brooklyn rapes a 22 year old unconscious girl behind a dumpster physically damaging her genitals and getting charged with five cases; two for rape, two for felony, and one for attempted rape. This American would get convicted for a potential 14 years in jail just like anyone else would.
But this isn’t the case for this Olympic aspiring swimmer Brock Turner, a student from the Stanford University, with an annual tuition fee of $43,683 (£32,542). The same white rich American has the power from his wealth to hire any lawyer that's willing to defend a rapist, has the wealth to pay any bail given to him in which the court will know. Brock Turner went to court for his actions and was only convicted with $150,000 bail and roam freely in county jail for 6 months’ probation.
That is all he got. That is all he got for physically abusing a 22 year old defenceless women while she laid unconscious. This is all he got for not only physically penetrating but mentally afflicting her. Her whole life won't be the same ever again. She will forever know for the rest of her left that a foreign object has been inside her and damaged her. She will now have to live her life not knowing who to trust, building up anger and blame, living with the shock, becoming less confident and having the feeling that she has lost control of her own body, feeling helplessness, having the fear, having no one else to blame but herself and the guilt for ‘allowing’ this crime to happen, she will now have to live her life feeling that her reactions are just a sign of weakness just like the other survivors of rape.
She learned the same day what happened as soon as everyone else in the world knew. The victim found the answers when she was scrolling through twitter and finding articles relating to the breaking news that she was a part of.
Her perspective
The victim went out to this “dump party” ten minutes away from her house. As she stated she had nothing else to do with her younger sister who was visiting for the weekend. Next thing she remembered was that she was in a gurney in a hallway with dried blood and bandages covering her hands and elbows, pine needles indented in her head and the back of her neck with no idea what happened. No recollection but all she knew was that she was in pain. A deputy explained that she had been assaulted. With still no idea of what happened she went to the toilets, pulled down her bottoms that the hospital gave her and this is when she quoted, in the letter to the attacker that was read in court “when i pulled down my underwear,i felt nothing” “...and everything inside me was silenced”. So puzzled and bemused about the situation then she was given papers to sign. These papers stated ‘Rape Victim’. Try envisioning what will go through your head when you’ve been looking for a solution since you awoke in a hospital and this is the solution you have found, being a victim of rape. Signing your signature on a peice of government paper stating you have been raped!
Try imagining your sister, your mother, or your daughter being in a hospital, clothes confiscated, standing naked while the nurses hold a ruler against various abrasions of her body, photographs being taken as if she’s now an object, imagine how she will feel. Try imagining how you feel when she tells you “i stood there examining my body beneath the stream of water and decided, i don't want my body anymore’. This is the side clearly no rapist can see. Imagine the feeling of the victim when the father of the convicted rapist, when knowing about the inequity punishment of 6 months, says in the courtroom ‘That is a steep price to pay for just 20 minutes of action’. That ‘20’ minutes of action has no affected the victim’s life FOREVER.
I just wanted to show about the impacts of rape and how different influences can change the justification for the victim when something so inhumane like this can happen. This stuff gets me quite angry and disappointed with the authories who promise to serve and help us people. This is more than just the Brock Turner investigation, the USA is one of the biggest influences within the global powers and showing such disgusting justification then it shows a threat sand pothole within our modern day power. This shows no one has equal still to this day.
